Steve Jobs’ decision to leave his post as CEO of Apple was huge news, especially for the San Jose Mercury News, the newspaper of record for Silicon Valley.

We played the story big. I decided to have the archival images of Jobs toned in four-color black and white to give the lead photo — a moody image from Getty — more pop. I think it also poignantly illustrates the great physical changes wrought by the illness that eventually killed Jobs.
